Tribute & Message From The Family

Leah L. Houg, 46, of North Liberty, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, November 29th at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, where a gathering for family and friends will follow until 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Leah's name can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Leah Lynn Kinard was born January 22, 1969 in Champaign, Illinois; daughter of J.C.Kinard and Dianna Schroder. On October 28, 1995 she was united in marriage to David D. Houg.

Leah led a life rich in love and leaves behind a legacy of happy memories for her family and many friends. She met the world with kindness and was a positive force in the lives of many.

Leah discovered her calling as a childcare provider and was honored to share in the nurturing and development of many dear children for more than 18 years. To her, this was not a job as much as an investment of a part of herself in each child. She was always thrilled to hear from past "graduates" and see how they'd matured.

While childcare brought Leah immense personal satisfaction, her family was what she cherished most. Seeing her children grow to caring adulthood was a source of great joy. Leah is survived by her husband, David; her daughter, Brieana, her son, Nicholas; her granddaughter, Leah Sienna; her mother Dianna Schroder and her sister, Amy Volesky.

She was preceded in death by her father, and sister, Minel Kinard.

She was dearly loved and will be missed by our entire community.

When I graduated high school, Leah became my best friend. We spent hours together. We were always laughing and having a good time. I remember that when we had to be serious, she was very easy to talk to and she knew she could talk to me. She was my sister, she will always be my sister. I am very sad to know that she is not with us. I will miss her so much.

I cannot share only one memory, it would be impossible to pick just one joyful moment with Leah. Leah loved her family above all, her daycare families were also in her hearts every day as well as her friends, there is nothing Leah would not do for anyone. She always had a smile, a laugh, a positive spin or remark for every sad thing that might be happening in someone's life. She was a remarkable, positive, amazing friend, mom, grandmother and wife. David, Bri, Nicholas and Leah Sienna, you are all in my heart, my prayers, and every tear is a reminder of a hug or laugh or memory for Leah. There were so many good times coming too, and she will be missed so very much. Your family is in my prayers, every day. Silver Dollar City won't be the same without her visits.

Steve and I knew from the moment we met her she was the one to care for our child. Her smile and laugh were so contagious. She was our angel sent from Heaven to care for our little Seth. We always knew he was safe and well cared for if he was with Leah. We will miss her smile and her voice. She welcomed everyone into her home. She even cared for our 4 legged furry family members when we needed her. Heaven has the best childcare provider there is. We will never forget all the love she gave. We will miss her so dearly. As Seth says "she helped raise me."Much love and sympathy to David, Brie and Nick. Seth (Sethie), Steve and Diane Murphy

Leah, one of my dearest, funniest, most upholding friends I've ever had. It is an instinct to pick up the phone and call you. It will bring me to tears every time I have to stop myself. You are truly one person that touched so many lives in such a positive way, and I picture and can hear your laughter while looking at this picture above. My condolences and heartfelt sympathy go out to David, Brie, Nick, and baby Sienna Leah. You all made her heart and her life complete. She could have never asked for more.

We have known Leah for 17 years this month. She cared for my sons now 17 and 13. She was their third parent and I undoubtedly owe her for love and guidance that went beyond her daycare obligation and helped my sons become the persons that they are. Leah was a model of compassion and kindness and the world is less without her. We will all miss her mothering, generosity, tenderness, cheer, listening ear, and peanut butter balls. I hope she knew how much she was loved by us. Brian, Melissa, Noah, & Max

I shared lots of ideas that keep us in the childrens business. Leah always would smile and say hello each time we would meet at our conventions and classes. I sure will miss her smile. This comes as a shock and to this moment as I type I still cant have it in me that she is gone. I will miss her. Love and prayer goes out to the family.
